SEPANG, Malaysia -- Mercedes confirmed it was the team to beat at the Malaysian Grand Prix by setting the fastest times in both of Fridays practice sessions, although its Formula One rivals were closer than expected. Axel Werner Jersey . Nico Rosberg, coming off his win at the season-opening race in Australia, was fastest in the second session and overall with a time of 1 minute, 39.909 seconds around the Sepang International Circuit, exceeding Ferraris Kimi Raikkonen by three-hundredths of a second. Raikkonen, who struggled in Melbourne, was also second fastest in the morning session behind Rosbergs Mercedes teammate, Lewis Hamilton. Although Mercedes was expected to dominate the early races of the season, and did so in Australia, the top six cars on Friday afternoon were separated by just two-tenths of a second, indicating a competitive race on Sunday. "We are still having some small issues and therefore we were not able to maximize everything today," Rosberg said. "The quickest teams seem to be closer together than in Australia, so we still have work to do overnight to improve our level of performance." Defending four-time world champion Sebastian Vettel overcame some technical issues that restricted his running in the morning session and was an impressive third fastest in the afternoon, while his Red Bull teammate Daniel Ricciardo was seventh. The bad news for Vettel was that he needed to change his computer power supply unit, which alternates the power source between the engine, the turbo and battery-stored energy. That means he is onto his third of the season, with a limit of five all year before penalties kick in. "Friday timings are not the most important in the world, but to be out there in the range with the other guys was a decent day," Vettel said. "It was not a completely smooth day for both of us; for myself, still some things to solve on the software side, programming the car, which sounds wrong but that is the way it is." Hamilton was fourth in the second session, ahead of Ferraris Fernando Alonso and Williams Felipe Massa. Hamilton is using the same engine that caused his early retirement from the Australian GP, with the team having fixed the misfire and preserved an engine which is also subject to the same five-per-season limit. McLarens Jenson Button was eighth quickest, ahead of Williams driver Valtteri Bottas and Force Indias Nico Hulkenberg. On a typically hot but dry day at Sepang, all drivers endured technical issues of some kind, ranging from the lack of downforce which caused several off-track excursions, high tire-wear from the consequent sliding, and fuel consumption issues with the new V6 turbo hybrid engines and the introduction of fuel usage limits. As in Melbourne, Lotus and Caterham were the teams to suffer most. Neither Lotus car completed a lap in the morning as the team continued to play catchup on its engine development after a strife-torn off-season. Pastor Maldonado sat out the afternoon too, and while Romain Grosjean made several trips out on track, he suffered repeated breakdowns. Caterhams Kamui Kobayashi had yet more problems with his energy-storage system, necessitating another replacement after two in Melbourne, meaning he is already closing in on the season limit. Gabi Jersey . Bookies were offering odds of 13/1 before kickoff that the home team Houston Dynamo would prevail by three goals to nil. Filipe Luis Jersey . Donald Young lost in straight sets to Israels Dudi Sela 6-3, 6-0. Querrey, ranked No. 61, is the second-highest ranked American, ahead of Johnson (64). http://www.socceratleticomadridonline.us/Luciano-Vietto-Atletico-Madrid-Jersey/ . -- D.A. Points was disqualified Friday from the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am for using a training device while waiting to play the 18th hole at Pebble Beach.KAISERSLAUTERN, Germany -- Lars Bender salvaged a 3-3 draw for Germany against Paraguay in their friendly game on Wednesday, a result that left coach Joachim Loew pondering serious defensive frailties in his side. "We made elementary mistakes, tactical mistakes, especially in the beginning. We lacked concentration," Loew said. "Overall in the first half, the whole defence was very erratic. The opponent had too much space. But you could see some players were missing match practice. The freshness wasnt there." Jose Ariel Nunez opened the scoring with Paraguays first shot in the ninth minute, and more sloppy defending allowed Wilson Pittoni to make it 2-0 four minutes later. Ilkay Gundogan pulled one back in the 18th, and Mats Hummels sprung the offside trap for Thomas Mueller to equalize in the 31st. But Samudio restored Paraguays lead before halftime, when former Bayern Munich striker Roque Santa Cruz found him unmarked at the far post. Bender saved the home sides blushes in the 75th, when he beat Oscar Romero to the ball, took it on his chest and volleyed into the far corner. "Im not worried," said Germany captain Philipp Lahm. "Next time well have time to work together, and well be better. Its normal when you have players coming together from different teams, all with different philosophies." It was a frustrating evening too for Miroslav Klose, back at the stadium where he started his professional career, as he failed to score the goal needed to equal Gerd Muellers record of 68 for Germany despite several good chances. But Paraguay captain Cruz was happy. "We have a very young team. Not many of our players have experience abroad, so its a very nice result," Cruz said. The visitors were well-organized throughout -- contrary to the German defence -- managing to stifle space in midfield and quickly launching long passes to counterattack. Pittonis simple ball over the defence allowed Nunez in to rifle his shot past Manuel Neuer. "We put no pressure on the player in midfield to stop the long ball," Loew said. Sami Khedira botched his clearance after Neuer punchhed away Samudios cross, and Pittoni volleyed the ball 20 metres into the left corner. Lucas Hernandez Jersey. It was Paraguays second shot. "Normally he has to clear the ball," Loew said. Gundogan scored with a curling shot inside the left post, when Justo Villar got his hands to the ball but was unable to keep it out, and Germany deserved to equalize when Mueller stayed cool to pick his spot. Samudios goal left the home fans whistling as the teams left for the break. Germany improved for the second half, though missed several chances before Bender finally equalized. "Of course the performances will improve once the players get into their seasons with their clubs," Loew said. "We will -- like we always do -- improve through September and October." Germany has World Cup qualifiers against Austria and the Faeroe Islands in September, and then against Ireland and Sweden in October. "We cant play like that against Austria. Its a warning shot," said Neuer. "We need to analyze it and learn from it."
